I would guess most PvP to have fun. Having fun also includes not having to grind ISK and waste your time on other activities.
You don't strictly "earn ISK" by PvPing, you're aiming at funding your further PvP activities. That relies on knowing what to fly and more importantly what to engage. Knowing where to fly and whom to fly with also helps, ofcourse.
Ofcourse, if you're careful, you won't get into some suicidal fights, which could've been very entertaining. You still can often go against the odds and come out on top, though, but that takes practise.
This. "Earning ISK" in PvP is just looking for a break-even-point. You're going to get kills, you're going to get losses. You just need to try to keep yourself in ships. Let PI, mission running or complexing (depending on where you are and what you like) actually *make* you money to upgrade ships. That said, I have ~85% kill/death efficiency and ~90% ISK destroyed/lost efficiency in low-sec. By-and-large, I make ISK off of PvP (not much, but enough to keep me flying shinier and shinier ships :D). No ransoms, just picking up and selling drops. The losses I do have normally only come from fleet fights, so about 50% of them I still get the loot from my ship losses (sometimes the other guys hold the field, nothing you can do about it). Also, if you get a good corporation, and you lose a ship on a fleet battle, you'll get most of the loot from the battle donated to you for ship replacement. I would say a 70-75% K/D efficiency should keep you breaking even on T2 cruisers/battlecruisers, and that's not that hard to get with a few friends and some sound tactics. Or, you could ransom people instead of killing them. I've killed quite a few T3s/Marauders/Mission BSs that I could have ransomed for huge amounts more ISK than the loot they dropped, but I'm a killmail ***** .
